House of the Dragon Star Steve Toussaint Accuses viewers of Racism

House of the Dragon star Steve Toussaint has some words for the haters. The actor, who plays Lord Corlys Velaryon or “The Sea Snake” in the HBO series, fired back at racist viewers who had a problem with him portraying the wealthiest man in Westeros.

In a conversation with Men’s Health, Toussaint pointed out that people who are angry with diverse period dramas base their “idea of the history of this country on a few films and stuff that were made in the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, which don’t bear any resemblance to the truth. Historically, people of my hue and your hue, we didn’t just turn up here in the ’70s or the ’60s.”

Toussaint’s House of the Dragon character, who is head of House Velaryon, was not specifically described as white in George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood in which the show was based, but was said to have “Targaryen white-blonde” hair.

Though that white-blonde hair is something he does sport in the show, the actor was surprised at what people are willing to buy and what they are not.
