The final interview with George Orwell discussing his book “1984.”
1984 is George Orwell’s dystopian social science fiction novel and cautionary tale written by English writer George Orwell. Thematically, it centers on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance and repressive regimentation of people and behaviors within society. Orwell modelled the totalitarian government in the novel after Stalinist Russia and Nazi Germany. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated.
One could say that the ‘fast track’ to 1984 happened in 2000, when the Twin Towers collapsed after terrorists crashed planes into both buildings (Yes, Tower 7 fell too). After this President Bush signed the Patriot Act, which increased the surveillance state in America and bleeding over into the rest of the world. Julian Assange is an example of a journalist (founder of Wikileaks) whom was arrested for being too good at his job, not necessarily doing anything wrong, and the tightening of the corporate infrastructure that dominates lives in the western world.
Are things as bad as the Orwellian dystopia Orwell warned us about 70 years ago?
