Of course, he was not celebrating the fact that the French players won, meaning those of French genetics, but rather those of African Genetics. I remember this quite well, and I also remember my black colleagues, their family and friends all rooting for France. Not because they love France but because their team was mostly, well, black. I found this amusing and predictable because human tendency is to lean to our tribal ways.
I remember Twitter debates between the French and Americans. The French were posting images of the Dream Team from 1992 as proof that the United States also uses African talent to win games. Just one problem with that – players like Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing are descendants of slaves, which means their ancestors were in America before America was ever founded. They are not first or second generation Americans, they are foundational black Americans – a concept that apparently is lost on much of Western Europe. Western Europe, where everyone decided to worry about climate change and stop making babies, while importing new citizens from all over the globe
Fast forward to 2022 and France was back in the World Cup Title game, this time facing off against Argentina. Argentina is white, with a healthy mix of the native Indian population. But compared to France they are a bunch of pasty gingers.
But beyond being united by blood, they are united by culture, religion and nationality. They are basically all brothers of different mothers.
And it shows.
They seemed united. Their fans looked like them. There was an emotional bond that can’t be replicated by recruiting a bunch of nationalities to form a global all-star team that wears jerseys with the word France on them.
Kylian Mbappé, France’s best player, grew up in France. His father is from Cameroon. It would have been great for Cameroon to have one of the best players in the world on their team. After World War 1 Cameroon became a League of Nations mandate territory. France integrated the economy of Cameroon with that of France, modifying the colonial system of forced labour. World War 1 and colonialism is still paying off for France in the form of World Cup Soccer Players.
And Twitter is back to fighting across racial and nationalistic lines.

Now compare that with this image of 19-year-old Mbappe, after scoring in the 2018 final against Croatia and moments after the final whistle. No joy, no emotion, no pride, no love for anyone but himself.
This isn’t to say there weren’t any French players who wanted it as badly, I’m sure there were. But when your country actively works to replace you, your culture & your religion w/ people who could never feel the same attachment to the nation, it makes me happy to see them lose.

I’d imagine a lot of the Argentinian players also have dual citizenship. French players were all born in France. That doesn’t make them less French. Abhorrent take.
So that’s it. Many on Twitter are breaking things down along racial lines. The white team beat the black team. Others are implying cultural, nationalistic, political and even religious meaning.
Whatever reality you choose to live in, it’s undeniable that the trend is for humans to go tribal. Just like Trevor Noah did 4 years ago. And while this is perfectly normal, in a global world where nations become increasingly borderless, it is deemed unacceptable. As a result, we now live in a world were the perfectly normal way to be is deemed unacceptable by corporate interests and nation states. In fact, what is perfectly normal has become a form of rebellion. And the future, as a result, can’t be anything other than unstable.
